Фалклендскія астравы былі адкрыты двойчы: у [[1690]] годзе англійскімі мараплаўцамі і ў [[1694]] годзе французскімі (апошнія назвалі іх Мальвінамі, у гонар роднага горада Сан-Мала). З пачатку XIX стагоддзя (пасля атрымання незалежнасці) Аргенціна лічыла гэтыя астравы сваімі. Захоп Мальвінскіх астравоў Злучаным Каралеўствам ў [[1833]] годзе выклікаў незадаволенасць сярод насельніцтва Аргенціны. Прыйшоўшы да ўлады ў канцы 1981 года генерал-лейтэнант аргенцінскай арміі Леапольда Гальціеры вырашыў выкарыстаць народнае абурэнне з гэтай нагоды.
