Шмат стагоддзяў Веды перадаваліся вусна ў вершаванай форме і толькі значна пазней былі запісаныя. Індуісцкая рэлігійная традыцыя лічыць Веды апаўрушэйа — не створанымі чалавекам вечнымі богашчырымі Пісаннямі, якія былі дадзены чалавецтву праз святых мудрацоў. Існуе чатыры Веды:

- Яджурведа — «Веда ахвярных формул»
- Самаведа — «Веда песнапенняў»
