З'яўляецца апошняй прыступкай развіцця старажытнаегіпецкай мовы, якая ахоплівае прыкладна дзве тысячы гадоў. Выкарыстоўвае уласны алфавіт на аснове грэчаскай сістэмы пісьма. Адну з першых граматык копцкай мовы склаў нямецкі вучоны-езуіт А. Кірхер («Prodromus copticus», 1636).
