У [[1891]] годзе Макс Вольф упершыню выкарыстаў для пошуку астэроідаў метад астрафатаграфіі, пры якім на фотаздымках з доўгім перыядам экспанавання астэроіды пакідалі кароткія светлыя лініі (у той час, як зоркі заставаліся кропкамі дзякуючы таму, што тэлескоп паварочваецца ўслед за кручэннем нябеснай сферы). Гэты метад значна павялічыў колькасць адкрыццяў ў параўнанні з ранейшымі метадамі візуальнага назірання: Вольф ў адзіночку адкрыў 248 астэроідаў, пачынаючы з (323) Бруцыя, да яго было выяўлена крыху больш за 300. Сёння больш чым 160.000 астэроідаў ідэнтыфікавана, пранумаравана, некаторым дадзены імёны.
